SUPPORT TO THE COMMUNITY

The SW Virginia Chapter of MOAA is a strong supporter of the Military Family Support Center. The Military Family Support Centers, Inc. (MFSC) is a private not for profit 501 (c)3 charitable organization whose mission is to identify and provide for the morale, welfare, and informational needs of military families (of all branches and components) who reside outside of the established support networks.

The Military Family Support currently faces some daunting tasks.

THE # 1 TASK:   Feed America's destitute Military Families locally, across the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond.

THE CHALLENGE:  25% of our Military Families (Active, Federal Reserve and National Guard) go to bed hungry each night.  The raw number could equal about 2,700 families with 2 adults and 2 kids or 1 adult and 3 kid’s totaling some 10,800 souls.  The largest numbers of hungry military families reside in SW Virginia with a large quantity in Central Virginia.

CONSIDER:  At a value of $31.00 a person, a family of four would receive food valued at $124.00 for 3 days or $41.33 per day.  Therefore, a week of groceries would total $289.33.  That means to feed all 10,800 souls for a week could cost about $781,191.00.  With $20.665.00 some 500 souls in 125 families would be assisted.  $41,330.00 could feed some 1,000 in 250 families.  $61,995.00 feeds 1,500 in 375 families.  In 2014 the MFSC feed almost 375 families with $27,000.00 for fresh groceries supplemented with large quantities of non-perishable foods, personal hygiene articles, diapers, wipes, and healthy house/clothes cleaning supplies.

THE # 2 TASK:  Assistance to military families for repairs or maintenance of autos, home, appliances, and such.

THE # 3 TASK:  Addressing relationship and building events, moral or recreational activities, education and other such interpersonal issues.
